krampus in the capitol

we took a family trip to DC this week and i saw a few things that put me in mind of krampus. the first was this wooden puppet, made as part of a WPA program by siberian-born artist basil milovsoroff (1906 – 1992) and is baased on the russian folkloric villain koschei.

then, i saw this carnival mask from puerto rico. made in the city of ponce as recently as 1997, this particular mask is very krampusy to me.

— but then, there’s a wide curve, isn’t there, when it comes to krampus. that’s why we hope we will see many interpretations this december!
